A Look at Slip Dog Collars

If you are a dog owner, it can be helpful for you to understand what types of dog collars are available on the market today. Through this article you are provided a look at one of the more common types of dog collars that are being used by pet owners today - slip dog collars. By considering this information you will be able to decide whether or not slip dog collars make sense for you and your pet.

Slip dog collars are a commonly used type of dog collar. These dog collars are described as having a length of nylon or rope with rings at either of the ends. These dog collars are then able to be formed into a loop that fits around the top of a dog\'s neck, just behind his or her ears. The ring that will connect to the leash goes over the backside of the dog\'s neck and not under. The leash can then be attached to either the live or the dead ring (as will be discussed in a moment) depending on the level of control that you desire you have over your pet at any given moment in time.

By connecting the leash to what is known as the dead ring on these type of dog collars there will be no constriction whatsoever of the dog\'s neck. On the other hand, if you connect the leash to what is known as the live ring on these dog collars, the chain slips or adjusts tighter when it is pulled and alternatively slips loser when the tension ends up being released.

In using these slip dog collars, a quick and yet gentle jerk followed by an immediate release alerts your pooch that he or she has done something he or she should not have done, that he or she has done something or another that is not desirable. This action by you is called a leash pop, correction or snap.

The reference to choking that sometimes is made in regard to slip dog collars is not entirely on point. Yes, in theory slip dog collars have no limit as to how far that they can constrict a dog\'s neck. However, when properly used, these types of dog collars simply do not involve choking the animal. But, you must always be aware of the potential for the animal to choke on these types of dog collars and you must vigilant in the manner in which they are utilized - always and in all circumstances.

Slip dog collars are also known as slip chains, choke collars or choke chains depending on where you live and so forth. Different merchants that sell these types of dog collars may market them under one or another of these names - or perhaps even under some other type of derivation.
